Lonely Planet says to avoid Anzac Cove

In a self-described unpatriotic move, Lonely Planet writer Steve Fallon has called on travellers to visit Anzac Cove on any day other than April 25 in an effort to save the peninsula from overcrowding and environmental destruction.

But RSL National president Bill Crews said the backpackers' bible, to be released on April 6 in time for the Anzac Day celebrations, would hurt the memory of our fallen soldiers.

"If you just want to visit the sites and see where things happened then any other day is fine but the important thing about being there on Anzac Day is to participate in the commemorative services which are the special events on those occasions," Mr Crews said yesterday.

"To participate in the commemorations, there's only one day you can do that and that's on April 25."

Fallon, a US freelance travel writer living in London, said in the latest version of the Turkey guide book that Gallipoli was under threat by its increased popularity and ineffective conservation by local authorities.

"Supposed 'improvements' such as carparks and road-widening schemes have caused considerable damage to some areas, most shockingly at Anzac Cove," Fallon wrote in the popular book.

"The beach there is now little more than a narrow strip of sand. Perhaps the only way to save Gallipoli is to do the 'unpatriotic' thing and stay away, at least on April 25."

RSL NSW president Don Rowe said he was hurt and disappointed by the suggestion to ignore Anzac Diggers on their commemorative day, saying work was being done by the Australian and Turkish Governments to preserve the historic site.

"Gallipoli may have been loved to death in some cases but not to the extent that people shouldn't go," Mr Rowe said. "As far as Australia is concerned it is just unpatriotic."

Lonely Planet's Melbourne-based publisher and commissioning editor Will Gourlay said they carefully considered the wording before sending the edition to print.

"It's a guide book, it's not a rule book," Mr Gourlay said.

"We realised it's an issue that is particularly close to Australian hearts so we deliberated and decided what was the best thing to do - particularly for that reason.

"There are lots of Anzac Day services that don't happen in Gallipoli to remember the Diggers and you can still pay your respects at any other time of the year.

"If it is not so crowded, then you will be having less of an impact on Anzac Cove."
