Albert Lee on Sailors with disABILITIES for Rolex Sydney to Hobart
ALBERT Lee knows you don't need all your limbs to be a sailor, but a good head for heights sure helps.

The double-amputee, rated the fastest mover around the deck of the 52-footer Sailors With disABILITIES, sets sail in his fourth Rolex Sydney to Hobart on Friday.

And Lee, who lost both legs after falling from a train, hopes he is on a fast boat to victory. After being forced out of the Australian classic with boat damage in 1996 and 2004, Lee last year missed out on being part of the crew that claimed the honours in the competitive PHS handicap division of the race. But the Sydney sailor believes he and his crewmates on David Pescud's 52-footer are in with a chance of a repeat performance.

"I have a low centre of gravity so I have no problems getting round . . . trying to reach things is my only problem," he said.

Among his crewmates are Christina Schulthess, who is hearing-impaired, Alan Grundy, who suffers from polio, and Kirk Watson, who has a genetic disease that has left him with just 2 per cent vision. The length of the race means his guide dog, Tiller, will be be confined to shore.

"I would love for her to come with me but it would be too cruel," said Watson, 36, who has sailed most of his life and embarks on his sixth Sydney to Hobart this year.
