Cruise passengers take to boats
THOUSANDS of cruise passengers will be forced to disembark on tenders and small boats this summer because of a lack of shipping berths in Sydney.

The unseemly scramble, which will have luxury ships moored to buoys in the harbour while offloading and loading passengers, baggage and food, will once again expose Sydney's woeful lack of berths for big ships.

On March 1 alone, four ships carrying as many as 9000 passengers will be in Sydney Harbour.

Two of them - the Pacific Dawn and the Crystal Serenity - have the only available berths at Wharf 8 Darling Harbour and the Overseas Passenger Terminal respectively.

The remaining ships, the around-the-world-liner Aurora and the 2000-passenger Celebrity Millennium, will moor at buoys off Point Piper and Taronga Zoo.

Ann Sherry, the chief executive of shipping giant Carnival Australia, predicted it would be ``a challenging day for Sydney Harbour'', but said such a situation was not unexpected.

"We have been flagging this since I've been in the job,'' she said.

"My frustration is that we are sitting on infrastructure that has been the same for nearly 100 years.''

Ms Sherry has repeatedly warned that Sydney - and Australia - risks losing cruise business if a solution cannot be found soon.
