Danger of beach hot-spots in Sydney, NSW

THEY'RE among the state's most loved patches of coastline, nestled in the heart of Sydney and our favourite holiday haunts.

But as thousands of swimmers and rock fisherman head to the beach this summer, lifesavers warn that familiar stretches are also the deadliest.

Idyllic Byron Bay heads the state's list of drowning locations with three deaths at popular Belongil-Main Beach and Wategos in 2007-08.

In Sydney, renowned surf breaks Dee Why and Maroubra, along with nearby Lurline Bay, have claimed more lives than any other beach, with two each over the past year, Surf Life Saving Australia statistics show.

The revelation comes as Olympic champion and former volunteer lifesaver Grant Hackett launches a national surf safety campaign that includes instructions for CPR and how to spot a rip.

A national map of coastal drownings shows more people perished in NSW than the rest of the nation combined with 32 deaths, compared with 25 nationally, including 29 men.

And males in their 50s were the most common victims, accounting for a third of all drownings, with 11.

In the most comprehensive coastal drowning assessment, the SLSA has mapped out every beach drowning in Australia with help from the National Coroners Information System.

National Surf Life Saving co-ordinator Matt Thompson yesterday said the biggest factor in all drownings was failure to obey flags.

Swimmers tend to drop their guard at familiar patrolled beaches where they believe they are being watched.

Mr Thompson said many drowning occurred within sight of flags.

"You find people overrate their own ability and while they're not far from supervision every second counts and that could be the difference between us getting there and not," he said. "No matter how experienced you think you are, a lot of rips are very hard to spot."

Coastal drownings rose 13 per cent last summer. Among 10 drownings in Sydney, a woman died at Bondi while men perished at Whale Beach, Clovelly and Mona Vale.

Kiama Beach was the scene of two of five southern drownings, with one each at Port Kembla, Shellharbour (Bass Point) and Broulee.

On the North Coast, two people drowned at Nambucca Heads, one at nearby Scotts Head, while there were two deaths on the Central Coast, at Bateau Bay and Lake Munmorah.

Peak drowning times were 2pm to 4pm (8), 5pm to 7pm (7) and 5pm to 7am (3), with 16 deaths in summer and five in winter.
