School trips axed for being too dangerous
STATE high school students have been banned from overseas expeditions because the Department of Education and Training regards them as too dangerous.

Education chiefs have forced schools to drop plans for adventure trips to a range of countries including the Indian Himalayas - despite months of fundraising by students and families.

About 15 students at Barrenjoey High School at Avalon on Sydney's Northern Beaches have been refunded deposits for a $6300-a-head expedition to the Himalayas next year.

Other state high school trips for 2009 to Borneo, Vietnam and Cambodia were also scrapped as bureaucrats thought them too risky.

The excursions, involving trekking and charity work in often remote communities, are organised through World Challenge which runs expeditions for teenagers around the globe.

NSW is the only state or territory in which public schools have been forced out of the program and the state's private colleges have no problem with the expeditions.

One Year 10 Barrenjoey High student, refunded her $490 deposit, said the group was disappointed the expedition had been dropped.

"They were pretty shocked because there was no warning. Many of us took up extra jobs and shifts at the start of the year to raise money for it," she said.

World Challenge Australia managing director Lachlan Bunn said the company ran expeditions with 130 schools around Australia - more than half of them government schools.

"I was surprised (at the DET's decision) given that we work with dozens of government schools around Australia," he said.
