A shady deal on parking - Mac Bank's bizarre charge
The bank that ate Sydney with its toll roads and parking charges has added to its already sky-high long-term parking at the domestic airport.

For an extra $5 a day, travellers can keep their car out of direct sunlight.

And the airport is considering expanding the tax to provide more undercover spaces.

The New! Premium Shaded Long Term Parking (as the airport's website says) could be expanded, taking away spaces from the cheaper unshaded spaces.

The shade cloth does not quite keep out rain or wind, but a week-long spot that would normally cost $110 would be $145 in the shade, just one space over on a slightly less bright slab of concrete.

Sydney airport, majority owned by Macquarie Airports, has reported that full-year earnings grew by 6.9 per cent to $649.4 million in 2008, up from $607.5 million the previous year.

In announcing the profits, Macquarie Airports chief executive Kerrie Mather said their earnings were boosted by higher retail revenue.

"Commercial revenues held up very well through the year, supported by the fact that the duty free contract continues to operate on minimum guaranteed rents and the opening of the multi-storey car park," she said last month.

Last year Sydney airport doubled parking fees for international travellers leaving their vehicle for more than a day, charging $50 for the new multi-storey parking facility.

Free five-minute parking bays are gone, replaced with a minimum $7 fee for 30 minutes.

A cab has a $2 surcharge, a cup of coffee costs more than $4, and a baggage trolley costs about $4.

A Sydney airport spokesman said the shaded parking began in 2006 with 120 spaces, was doubled in 2007 to 240 spaces and a further expansion would soon be considered.

"Parkers have lots of choice. As well as the 240 shaded spots, there are about 4300 other parking spots in the long term car park."
