Have fun - but be sun smart

At the same time it’s important to remember that if we are heading outdoors, especially in the warmer months, that we look after our bodies by protecting our skin. Exposing unprotected skin to damaging UV radiation, can not only lead to premature skin ageing and cancer.

Our love for the great outdoors and our close proximity to the equator, places the majority of Australians at increased risk of skin cancer. Melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer and continues to be the fourth most common cancer in NSW.

But the good news is it’s easy to reduce our risk and still enjoy our favourite beaches and outdoor activities safely.

If you always burn or burn easily, take extra care when outdoors. Know your skin type because everyone’s skin is different. Some people have naturally darker skin than others, but tanning to achieve a darker skin colour causes skin cells to go into trauma. They will try to protect themselves from damage which may lead to cancer. So in fact, a tan is not a healthy glow.

Here are five easy ways to look after your skin this summer:

- Where possible, seek shade between 11:00 am and 3:00 pm. This is when UV radiation is most damaging. Many beaches have shelters which provide shade or plan ahead and take a tent or umbrella with you to ensure you have shade.

- If it’s not possible to be in the shade during this time, wear clothing that protects your body, in particular your shoulders, arms and legs. The best forms of clothing are comfortable, loose fitting and cast a dense shadow when held up to the light.

- Protect your face, neck and ears by choosing a hat that is broad-brimmed. Wearing a broad-brimmed hat is not only a great way to protect the top of your head but offers protection to those parts of the body, commonly prone to skin cancer.

- Sunglasses are important in protecting eyes from the UV radiation. Wear sunglasses that fit your face well and wrap around the sides of the face. Keep an eye out for glasses that meet the Australian Standard AS 1067.

- Sunscreen is your last line of defence. Try to keep a bottle with you at all times to ensure you don’t get caught out without protection. Choose SPF30+ broad spectrum water resistant sunscreen. Many people report getting sunburnt despite wearing sunscreen. It’s important to remember to apply sunscreen properly and frequently. Apply generously to the areas that are not protected 20 minutes before your head outdoors. To keep working, sunscreen then needs to be reapplied every two hours and after swimming.
