New era ship Arcadia, which brought 10 pound Poms, berths in Sydney

Another UK immigrant, Stella, said Arcadia introduced her to the wonderful P&O curries for lunch: "I recall we used to line up early outside the dining room where we could feel the air-conditioning seeping under the doors," she wrote in her memoirs.

Unlike the 1953-launched steam-driven namesake which carried about 430,000 of the one million Brits on the migration scheme, new Arcadia - the mark IV version - is adults only.

And the price of ticket to cruise the 47 nights from Southanmpton to Sydney is a far cry higher, from $9195 to $23,785 for a suite with a balcony, jacuzzi bath and butler service.

At 83,781 tonnes, the 2005-launched Arcadia towers above its predecessors and caters for a maximum 1950 passengers.

In contrast, the Arcadia used on the migration program was 29,734 tonnes and carried about 1400 passengers, 670 in first class, 735 in tourist class.

The new Arcadia, on a world voyage, will berth at about 6.30pm, taking over the spot of the elegant Cunard Queen Victoria which will sail at 3pm.
