Queen Mary 2 returns to Sydney Harbour after 2007 debacle
The passenger ship will sail into the harbour early Thursday morning and berth at Garden Island.

She will pass through the heads around 5am on Thursday and depart just before midnight the same day.

The biggest cruise ship ever to visit Australia measures 344m in length and is too large to dock at the overseas passenger terminal at Circular Quay.

In February 2007, hundreds of thousands of Sydneysiders flocked to the foreshore to see the Queen Mary 2 and her much older sister, Queen Elizabeth 2, arriving on the same day.

City traffic was in gridlock for several hours that evening, and there was severe overcrowding on buses, trains and ferries.

Many people were forced to scale the walls of the Royal Botanic Gardens on the harbour when rangers locked the gates at the normal 8pm closing time.

The state government has urged people planning to get a glimpse of the ship on Thursday to use public transport and expect traffic delays.

Special event clearways will be in place from 6am to midnight in the CBD, Darlinghurst and at Woolloomooloo and from 5am to 8am in Mosman, on the harbour's north shore.

"I'd encourage people to leave their cars at home and catch public transport into the city if they want to see the ship," NSW Transport Minister David Campbell said in a statement.

"Motorists should expect delays around those areas and allow plenty of extra travel time."

The Queen Mary 2 is one of 28 cruise ships set to visit the harbour in the 28 days of so-called Super February.
