Australia's loneliest camel gets a new home
After reading about her plight in The Daily Telegraph a family from Goulburn offered the lonely camel a new home.

Robert and Jayne Fletcher and their children Hannah, 4, and Laura, 10, already have two camels which they adopted from former theme park Australia's Wonderland when it closed.

If all goes to plan, Jessica will soon be living alongside Omar and Holly on the property Fletcher's Ark - a 45ha alpaca stud.

As well as alpacas, she will have donkeys and deer for company.

"It may take a little bit of organising but hopefully we'll be able to work something out to get her here safely," Mr Fletcher said.

Jessica lived happily in a paddock at the Sydney Skydiving Centre, near Picton, for 25 years until her mother died last year.

The centre was swamped with calls from all over the state yesterday from animal lovers offering her a new home.

"It's been fantastic," owner Phil Onis said.

"Some people rang up and said they have donkeys and cows in their backyard, but I think the camel would prefer to be with its own kind."

The centre even had a phone call from the late wildlife warrior Steve Irwin's Australia Zoo on Queensland's Sunshine Coast, but Mr Onis thought it would be too far for Jessica to travel.

While he is happy for Jessica, Mr Onis said staff would be sad to see her go.

"It's been a local landmark," he said. "That paddock has always been called 'Camel Paddock' so I don't know what we're going to call it now."

Mr Fletcher, who wants to one day turn his property into a school farm, used to have three camels.

But last year one of a friend's two camels was shot and killed and Mr Fletcher reluctantly sold the third.
