Commissioner calls on oil giants to explain rise

In the wake of unleaded petrol surging nearly 15c between Wednesday and yesterday, the national petrol commissioner said drivers should be instead demanding answers from the major oil companies and retailers.

The average price in Sydney hit 115.8c per litre late yesterday, up from 102c on Wednesday.

Some motorists were hit with prices as high as 125c yesterday as they filled up their cars ahead of the long weekend.

"The big oil companies and retailers really do need to explain what is happening," Petrol Commissioner Joe Dimasi said.

He said motorists are wrongly abusing service station workers.

"People get angry but the person selling the petrol doesn't necessarily know. The people that really do know what is going on are the people in the companies," he said.

Mr Dimasi said a surge in demand for Singapore Tapas oil justifies some of the pre-long weekend price hike, but retailers should communicate.

"This volatility - whilst it does appear to be driven by underlying market factors - is nevertheless upsetting for people and they therefore need to explain themselves.

"It is very unfortunate that before a long weekend there is such a big jump and there is no explanation from the big oil companies."

Motoring body NRMA said service station employees behind the counter deserved more respect.

"The NRMA strongly discourages people from yelling at or insulting the guy behind the counter," an NRMA spokesman said.

"At the end of the day they aren't the people making the money. We agree that the oil companies should be doing more to explain why the petrol price is so volatile."

Opposition roads spokesman Andrew Stoner blasted the commissioner's lack of power to act.

"Clearly Kevin Rudd's pre-election posturing over petrol prices has come to nothing, with his hand-picked petrol commissioner unable to stop the big oil companies from gouging holidaymakers," he said.

"Kevin Rudd was elected on a cost of living platform so he shouldn't have forgotten the significance of petrol prices on the family budget."
