Domestic tourism boom to create 390,000 jobs in five years

While the new year heralds grim predictions for the retail, public service, construction and manufacturing sectors, domestic tourism is going gangbusters.

According to Tourism Training Australia chief executive Bill Galvin, local tourism will continue to grow during the next three years as more Australians journey into their own backyards - particularly to rural and regional areas.

Mr Galvin said an extra 390,000 jobs would be created across the country during the next five years, many of them in NSW.

"NSW will attract 30 per cent of those new jobs," he told The Daily Telegraph.

"Many of these will be part-time or casual jobs in hotels, motels, restaurants, clubs, caravan parks and the emerging tourism markets. Many will be in rural, regional and outback Australia.

"And in particular we are placing an emphasis on the creation of jobs for mature age people."

The news in the retail sector is not so good though, with 21,000 jobs lost in the past three months as a result of the economic downturn.

Australian National Retailers Association chief executive Margy Osmond said that in the 1990-91 recession the retail sector lost 3.3 per cent of its workforce, or 36,000 jobs.

"If Australia was to experience an equally severe recession it could be possible we could lose a similar proportion of jobs - somewhere in the vicinity of 50,000 jobs," she said.

"However we're hopeful things will pick up towards the end of next year."

Master Builders Australia chief Wilhelm Harnisch said 2009 would bring "considerable job losses" for the construction industry, adding that 50,000 to 100,000 people - from project managers and site foremen to concreters and bricklayers - could lose their jobs.

"Early indications are 2009 will not be a good year for job creation in the construction industry," Mr Harnisch said.

There is also speculation thousands of public service jobs could be slashed as the Rudd Government embarks on a savings rampage.

Australia Industry Group chief executive Heather Ridout said pressure on employment had been evident for months.

"Companies are really focusing on getting costs out of their business, demand is falling so they don't need as many people, so the combination for that is negative for employment," she said.
