Joe Pagano burn-out champion of car festival Summernats
But Sydney doughnut-king Joe Pagano will be doing what he does best - dropping the clutch and smoking up his hotted-up VR Commodore ute - with the blessing of the boys in blue during the nation's biggest car festival Summernats.

As more than 100,000 car fans convege on Canberra for the four-day festival, which began yesterday, the 28-year-old Rossmore plumber is preparing to defend the burn-out crown he claimed in 2008.

If this lung-choking exhibition is anything to go by, the self-confessed street hoon will have the burning rubber fans in raptures.

Mr Pagano has spent more than $100,000 hotting up the $25,000 ute, with a 308 engine to deliver 467kW.

Running on water-based methanol, the 14-year-old ute, which can cover a 400m drag in 9.7 seconds, cannot be driven on the road because it emits smoke that stings the eyes.

Mr Pagano gets his kicks cleaning up at car festivals and drag race events around the nation.

"A brand new set of 4WD tyres probably lasts about two minutes, luckily I get mine from Bridgestone.

"But it's a great stress relief.

"It gets it out of the system."

He said the buzz of Summernats was impossible to beat," he said.

"When you're doing a burn-out it's like I'm in my own world.

"You've got so much smoke and everything and then when you get out of the car and wave to the crowd, they go off."

The national burn-out champion said his interest began after his first car - a Hyundai Excel - was impounded by police for three months when he was caught doing burn-outs in Wollongong.

He claimed the $1200 first prize at Summernats last year and is confident of winning again on Saturday when the burn-out event is staged.

In its 22 year, the festival has been marred in the past by unruly crowds harassing women. Talks have began about a possible future move to the Western Sydney International Dragway at Eastern Creek.
