Sydney from the skies

IN THE gleam of a gorgeous summer day, when the sand is scorching and the water cool, our beautiful city comes alive.

For a fresh perspective on Sydney from the heavens, The Sunday Telegraph took to the air to capture these images: sunbathers stretching out their towels at Manly; the thrill of race day; surfers paddling furiously to catch a wave as it begins to curl.

Gallery: Incredible photos of Sydney from the air.

From his vantage point in a helicopter, photographer Anthony Reginato caught all the fun of Boxing Day - bright, hot and utterly relaxed, just like the summer to come.

It's a snapshot of Sydney at play.

Happy snaps: More in Travel Galleries

At Bonnie Doon golf course, a bunch of mates prepare to putt on the fifth green, raising the flag, choosing clubs. Someone's bound to be cracking wise about the bunker.

Over at Randwick, horses canter to a halt, after the fury of an early afternoon race.

At the Eastern Creek raceway, a go-karter has come unstuck, stopping for a moment while the others zip past. And a few weary city shoppers pause in Hyde Park by the fizzing Archibald Fountain, more of which can be seen in Sunday Agenda and on our website.

On any decent summer's day, the real spirit of Sydney is around the water.

On the inner harbour, speedboats whiz back and forth between the lazy yachts, frothing white foam behind them.

At Clovelly, a lady covers up on the rocks, a white hat shading her face.

In the water, a mother introduces her baby to the delights of sea bathing in this safe little enclave.

Baby floats in a colourful plastic safety ring as mum keeps a firm hold.

At Manly, Bondi and Coogee, most are being sun-smart, smearing cream on their backs and shoulders. Someone crawls into a shade tent, maybe for a cold drink.

Couples in board shorts and bikinis lie towel-by-towel. A tanned man rests a book over his face, snoozing under the pages.

Blue-and-white umbrellas dot the sand like something Brett Whiteley might have painted.

We'd tell you to have a great summer, Sydney - but it looks like you already are.
